“Every sunset is an opportunity to reset.” – Richie Norton
I don’t so much find myself looking for resolutions in the new year, as much as I see it as an opportunity to get back on track with a few things. To reset and refocus. I have things in my life that I love, that do me good… but as the year goes on and fatigue sets in, many of these things, these endeavours, fall out of my routine. Or at least are not as prominent or looked after as I’d like.
Perhaps you are like me. Perhaps you have come into the new year thinking, ‘oh yes, I’d really better get back in control of things that benefit my wellbeing’. Whether you are big on the new year or not, I think the festive holidays provide us with a particular kind of energy. An energy and an intention to get life and our own resilience back under control, and this often mean focusing on a few areas of nourishment.
1. Exercise
Exercise in December is often harder. There is much more going on socially, and indulgence is never far away. Yes, like to get back on track with my exercise in the new year. But it is also an opportunity to reset old habits, patterns and routines. Perhaps it’s time to try something new. Exercise, however much you like it, can be boring. Take the opportunity of the new year to add something fresh to your exercise routine. Perhaps it’s a different walking or running route. Perhaps it’s a new machine at the gym, or a new skill to master. Perhaps you’d like to try a new sport or activity altogether. I took on skipping a few years ago and loved it! What might it be this year?
2. Conscious Eating
Again, December throws my routine off. We eat at odd times, we don’t know what day of the week it is, we throw any control out of the window. And we should. It’s a time of celebration! But now the year is afresh, I’m really looking forward to getting back to a conscious routine with food. I’m going to find a few new recipes, reset my weekly food plan, and get excited about getting my body ticking over in comfort once again.
3. Relationships
There are people I really must make an effort to go and see. There are relationships that I have not nurtured enough over the last year. January is a pretty empty month anyway. It can be pretty bleak too. Why not cheer it up and make it useful by reconnecting with those people that you wish were a little closer to you than they currently are?
4. Home Environment
The general state of our flat got away from me at the end of last year… and now my kid has a load of new stuff for us to find space for! Use that fresh energy to reset your home. Declutter that room, sort through that wardrobe, fill up those bin bags full of tat that no longer mean anything to you! This is the time to do it!
5. Goals
What do you want out of this year? If you are anything like me, the vast expanse of the next 12 months can seem overwhelming, especially, if also like me, you are in a business where you never know what work will come your way from one month to the next. Who knows what this year will hold?
Time to set some goals.
Are there any goals from last year that didn’t get hit? Fancy resetting on those and having another run at them? And as much as smaller goals are safer and ‘more achievable’, don’t be afraid to dream big and set a few goals that might seem, for now, a little out of reach… twelve months is a long time, and you never know where you might be this time next year.
