August’s Conscious Interview is here!

Louise Chester

This month features Louise Chester. Louise first started practicing Mindfulness in 1994 when she was a Director at UBS Ltd. She found it helped her have balance in her life, while sustaining a pressured career in investment analysis and fund management, ultimately as Head of Research and then Global Head of Telecoms and Media for Dresdner RCM.

Louise left the City in 2001 to establish a consultancy practice offering financial and strategic advice to business leaders both in the workplace and at Witherdens Hall, her award-winning, holistic Retreat in Kent. In 2010, she founded Mindfulness at Work Ltd. with the express intention of enabling people to easily access highly-effective Mindfulness training, to enable them to create value and thrive not just in the workplace, but in all areas of their life. Mindfulness at Work have partnered with over 100 organisations and introduced over ten thousand people to mindfulness in the last year, winning a coveted award from the legal sector in the process.

Where is home?

Canterbury, UK.

When did you first come across mindfulness / meditation?

As a teenager, via my grandmother.

Describe one practice you do everyday to keep calm and centred?

I do a long meditation every morning to remind me of where ‘home’ is and then have many triggers such as little stickers, phone reminders, traffic lights etc. to remind me to use the senses as a portal to come back home to myself throughout the day.

How can the business world benefit from mindfulness?

By having more calm, focus and clarity in our day, there are benefits at an individual and corporate level from the wiser choices we make.

What does ‘digital wellbeing’ mean to you?

Harnessing its potential to help me to flourish in all areas of my life.

Do you think technology will increase or decrease wellbeing?

If used wisely, it can increase wellbeing. It’s all about being conscious of the choices we make.

Paperback or kindle?

Both.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

That we are all capable of much more than we realise, if we just get out of the way of ourselves and live a life of purpose and service.

What is your favourite quote?

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom”

Viktor E. Frankl

If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?

Being here, now.
